Sun & Ski Sports: Going the Extra Mile
Every Sunday morning at 8 a.m., a group of 20 to 60 local bicyclists gather at the Promenade location of Sun & Ski Sports for a weekly road bike ride that winds 30 miles through Marvin and Waxhaw before returning to the store. There, Sun & Ski Sports staff welcome them back with coffee, snacks and an opportunity for the group to socialize.
Sun & Ski Sports doesn’t open until 11 a.m. on Sundays, but the group road ride is another way for the staff to connect with the local community and share their love of the outdoors, says manager Bryan Hojnacki.
“All of our employees are deeply involved in the sports they sell,” says Hojnacki, an avid runner himself. “Our experience of receiving first-hand knowledge from the brands in our store allows us to help customers be even more confident that what they’re purchasing was built to perform. We even have opportunities to demo select gear throughout the year, so we definitely go the extra mile to learn all we can.”
Sun & Ski Sports opened its Promenade location eight years ago and is a premier bike and ski shop that also carries outdoor fashion apparel, footwear and other specialty sports offerings for cyclists, runners and consumers looking for leading brands for an active lifestyle.
“Sun & Ski Sports has a great selection, but what has also made them stand out is their knowledgeable staff and excellent customer service,” says Jan Pugh, who oversees property management at Promenade on Providence for Childress Klein.
The store operates its bike shop year-round and provides lifetime adjustments for customers who purchase a bike at Sun & Ski Sports. And for parents purchasing a bike for their children for Christmas, Sun & Ski Sports will assemble and keep it hidden at their store until Christmas Eve as part of their “Hide-A-Bike” program.
During ski season (October to April), the store offers a wide variety of ski and snowboard gear and apparel, and the staff help customers plan their trips with a packing list of essentials they’ll need. For the junior skiers, Sun & Ski Sports offers a seasonal ski or snowboard lease package ($139).
“The lease option makes a lot of sense for younger skiers who will grow out of a given product quickly,” Hojnacki says.
Sun & Ski Sports prides itself on its competitive pricing and its superior service. The company has 31 locations nationwide, and the Promenade location has a warm, local-store feel.
“It’s super friendly,” Hojnacki says. “We like to have fun, and we’re all passionate about the outdoors.”
