Sushi 101 has been serving Charlotte for over 20 years and in that time, it’s become more than just a place to grab sushi. It’s a neighborhood staple where regulars are treated like family. We sat down with the team to talk favorite rolls, weekly specials and what’s kept customers coming back for two decades.
If you had to pick one roll off the menu that new customers must try, what would it be and why?
It’s hard to pick just one, but if we had to choose, it would be the Panhandle Roll. It’s got tuna on the inside, with yellowtail and avocado on top, finished with a touch of lime juice and sriracha.
We love this roll because it brings variety and just the right amount of spice – a great introduction to what we do best.
What are some of your most popular rolls or menu items?
A few fan favorite rolls keep showing up repeatedly: Rainbow, Professor Vu, Panhandle, Crispy Bagel, and Super Crunch. Each one brings something different to the table, which is part of why they’ve stuck around as customer go-tos.
Do you have any weekly specials that customers should know about?
Yes! We run different drink specials Monday through Friday. We also offer 50% off rolls for our lunch special during the week, available for both dine-in and takeout.
What makes Sushi 101 different from other sushi restaurants in Charlotte?
We’re a family-run restaurant, and that shows in everything we do. We want every guest to feel welcome, backed by good food and genuine service. Over the years, we’ve built a loyal base of regulars – we’ve literally watched their kids grow up coming here. Being part of the community for more than 20 years is something we’re proud of.
What inspired the name “Sushi 101”?
We wanted a name that was easy to remember and didn’t feel intimidating – something that made people feel comfortable walking in the door, whether they were sushi experts or trying it for the first time.
What are the best options for guests who don’t eat raw fish?
We’ve got plenty to offer beyond raw fish. Customers especially love our fried rice options, noodle bowls and hibachi dinners. All great ways to enjoy the Sushi 101 experience without the raw fish.
