Where to Buy Outdoor Gear in Charlotte: Q&A with Sun & Ski Sports

If you’ve ever walked into Sun & Ski Sports at Promenade on Providence, you know it’s more than just a gear shop—it’s a launchpad for your next adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist, weekend hiker, or gearing up for your first family ski trip, this local team is all about helping you get outside and enjoy it. We sat down with the crew to hear what sets them apart, what gear’s trending, and how they’re staying connected with the active Charlotte community.

What makes Sun & Ski Sports different from other outdoor retailers in the Charlotte area?
Honestly, it’s the people here. Everyone on the team is into the outdoors and loves helping others get outside too. We take time to talk with you, figure out what you’re into—whether that’s biking, hiking, skiing, or something else—and help you find gear that fits right. You get the big-store brands and pricing, but with a small-store feel where folks actually care. That combo is hard to beat.
What are some of the most popular products or gear people are shopping for this season?
Right now, it’s bikes. We’re still seeing a good number of people coming in for tune-ups and gear upgrades. But our busy season is right around the corner. Once the weather cools down, it shifts to skis, snowboards, winter boots, layers—you name it.
The Junior Lease Program is super popular with families getting their kids ready for the slopes.

What services do you offer beyond just retail? Repairs, rentals, or fittings?
We’ve got full-service ski and snowboard tuning, waxing, and boot fitting, plus both seasonal and daily rentals. On the bike side, we handle everything from simple adjustments to big repairs. Whether you’re heading to the slopes or the trails, we’ll make sure your gear is in solid shape before you go.
What advice would you give to someone just getting into outdoor activities like biking, hiking, or skiing?
Just start. You don’t need to have the best gear or be in perfect shape. Find an activity you’re curious about and take that first step. And if you’re not sure where to begin, we’re here to help guide you. Everyone starts somewhere, and the most important thing is to enjoy the journey.
Are there any upcoming in-store events, sales, or community partnerships we should know about?
We just wrapped up 24 Hours of Booty this past weekend, and it was awesome as always. Big thanks to everyone who came out to ride or support—it’s one of our favorite events each year. We’ve still got our Sunday group ride at 8 AM going strong. It’s casual, friendly, and open to anyone who wants to get some miles in. Swing by early if you need a quick tune-up before we roll out. And coming up in September, we’ve got the Flash Mob race, which is always a good time. It’s making a comeback, so stay tuned for more details.
And in October, we’ll be taking part in the St. Jude Walk to help raise money and bring awareness to an important cause. Lots of ways to get involved, we love seeing the community show up.
What’s one must-have item every adventurer should own, no matter their skill level?
A good pair of shoes or ski boots that fit well. That alone can make or break your day outside. And a solid pair of Darn Tough socks. They are super comfortable, durable, and worth having in your pack.
What do you love most about being part of the Promenade on Providence community?
It’s just a great spot. We’ve got an active community here. Lots of folks who bike, run, hike, and ski. Whether someone’s new to Charlotte or been here forever, there’s always good energy in the store. Being close to Lake Norman and the mountains makes it even better.
